Without knowing a word of English, Beto Perez came to Miami, Florida from Cali, Columbia to pursue the American dream; today he is one of the top Hispanic entrepreneurs in America.
If you’re one of the 15 million people that goes to a Zumba class, you know exactly why Zumba Fitness is one of the largest fitness brands in the world. Each class is jam-packed with upbeat music and people who love every second of it. The man behind the fitness craze is Beto Perez, an aerobics instructor who accidentally invented Zumba when he forgot his music tapes and improvised a dance workout to salsa music. After the class’ positive reviews, Perez teamed up with Alberto Perlman and Alberto Aghion to produce workout VHS tapes which soon went viral. Now, Zumba classes can be taken in over 200,000 locations in 180 different countries.
Growing up, Perez had a passion for dance ever since he was seven years old and watched the movie, Grease. When he was just 14 years old, his mother was injured by a bullet wound which forced him to work 3 jobs in order to support his family. However, he never lost his passion for dance. By the time he was 19 he was enrolled in one of Columbia’s best dance schools.
Through the years, Zumba has expanded its brand to apparel, video games, and charity. Most recently, Zumba partnered up with Susan G. Komen to launch Party in Pink which raises funds for the fight against breast cancer. This month, we honor Beto Perez for Hispanic Heritage Month for maintaining his determination through his humble beginnings, reinventing the fitness world, and continuing to spread positivity to millions of people.
